The Compromise
Breaking down an AR-15 for a deployment bag, a patrol rifle bag, a truck gun setup, or low-profile transport means the upper travels without the lower. The moment that happens, the rifle loses any meaningful protection for its most critical components. The bolt carrier group and charging handle are free to move. The lubricant is free to leak. The receiver is open at both ends.
In the past, shooters managed this with a rag, an old sock, or nothing at all. That is not a system.
A broken-down rifle needs to be deployable on demand. An unsealed upper is a liability — debris enters, lubricant leaks, and components move. The charging handle shifts, the BCG slides rearward, and eventually drops free into the bottom of whatever it is traveling in — and stays there until someone notices it is missing, or does not. The lubricant goes with it, black with fouling, into the lining of the bag.

Why does the BCG keep sliding out of my upper?

Black is the default — it disappears in a bag, on a shelf, or in a case. It is the correct choice when visual salience is not a priority.
The Dayglo family — Orange, Blue, Yellow, Magenta, and Green — serves a different function. A brightly colored cover on a detached upper receiver signals two things simultaneously to anyone handling it: the upper is secured, and the upper is unloaded. In a range environment, a training environment, or any setting where multiple shooters are handling multiple platforms, that visual signal has operational value that black does not.
