The VanGuard platform is built around a single design decision: cover only what needs to be covered, and add nothing else.
A pistol with a weapon-mounted light is a more capable defensive tool. It is also a harder carry problem. Most light-bearing holsters solve it by building a larger shell — more plastic, more geometry, more bulk — to accommodate the light's added footprint.
The VanGuard 3 solves it differently.
The VanGuard 3 does not enclose the pistol. It secures the light — and lets the light carry the gun.
By attaching to the SureFire X300U rather than the pistol frame, the VanGuard 3 covers both the light body and the trigger guard while leaving the grip, slide, and muzzle fully exposed. The light becomes the fitment point. The pistol follows.

The Minimalist Carry Compromise
Every carry method is a negotiated compromise. Minimalist carry gives up one-handed in-waistband reholstering, the body shield protection of a full holster shell, and the consistent indexing geometry of a full holster mouth. What it gains is a level of concealability and comfort that full-shell holsters cannot reach — and a range of carry contexts they cannot enter.
The VanGuard 3 is reholstered outside the waistband — seat the VG3 on the light first, then return the pistol and holster to the waistband together.
This is the intended use, not a workaround.
What minimalist carry gives back is access to clothing, situations, and environments where conventional holsters stop being practical. Dress clothes cut without extra room for a gun. Waistbands where every added layer matters. The choice that has historically been between carrying nothing and carrying a system too bulky for the clothing or environment.

The Profile

Most light-bearing holsters impose their geometry on top of an already-wide footprint. The VanGuard 3 imposes nothing additional. The pistol and light ride exactly as they would without a holster — same profile, same width, same weight distribution — with the trigger and light protected and an overhook or belt clip as the only interface to the carrier's clothing.
This becomes especially noticeable in AIWB carry, where even small increases in thickness and geometry compound quickly below the beltline.

This design choice has a significant practical consequence: because the VanGuard 3 fits to the light rather than the pistol, it is compatible with a broad range of pistol models that accept the X300U A and B — without requiring a pistol-specific shell for each platform.
Any pistol and X300U A/B combination is compatible as long as there is at least 3/4" of clearance between the muzzle end of the pistol and the bezel end of the light. This minimum gap allows the VanGuard 3 shell to seat properly and clear the muzzle during draw and reholster.
Carriers using aftermarket compensators, muzzle devices, or extended barrels should verify this gap before ordering.
Tuckability and Deep Concealment
The VanGuard 3's tuckable soft loop attachment changes what concealment means in practice for light-bearing carry.
A conventional light-bearing holster, even a well-designed one, cannot be tucked over. The clips, shell geometry, and light housing all sit above the beltline and remain visible no matter what the carrier wears over them.
